A new establishment has popped up in the North Loop of Minneapolis, and a few of us at the office decided to give it a try. First Draft Taproom & Kitchen is a self-serve taproom that also has tasty food.
The whole premise of this taproom is to offer a ton of beers for customers to sample, from everywhere. At the start, we walked in and were very surprised by how large the space was. After taking in our surroundings, we (I) gasped at the selection of beers available to us. We (I) felt like an adult in a candy store that recently replaced its selection of candy with beer. To unlock the taps, you have to get a bracelet from the front counter. They tie your name and card to the bracelet and all you have to do is scan to pour your own glass. My first pour was a total failure. In my haste and enthusiasm, I completely forgot to scan my bracelet. After being confused, and then embarrassed, I scanned and poured myself a Mexican chocolate stout. I’ll admit that I filled my glass a lot fuller than I originally intended, but I am one of the last people that would complain about getting more good beer.
If you’re not a fan of beer, fear not! They also have hard cider, wine and even kombucha on tap.
While imbibing at a table, appetizers came shortly after. We split some walleye sliders (delish), Minnesota sushi (pickle/ham/cream cheese rolls – delicious), and deviled eggs (best I have had). For the main, I had ordered a burger with fries. It was really good, but I think I will try the walleye tacos next time we go (because there will definitely be a next time).
All in all, First Draft far exceeded my expectations. Now all I have to do is work on my pouring skills. Practice makes perfect!
