PROJECT

Gathering Pines Bigfoot Hide & Sneak

THE OPENING POUR

The moment imagination met the woods.

Some projects start with a brief. This one started with a feeling.

The Y Adventure team wanted to create something families hadn’t experienced before: a storybook adventure hidden in the woods, built around curiosity, movement, imagination, and nature. Not a sports tournament. Not another camp activity. Something stranger, sweeter, and more memorable.

A missing Bigfoot. Woodland clues. Over a mile long journey through Gathering Pines. Kids running ahead on the trail while adults slowed down long enough to notice the trees.

It was ambitious from the beginning—and everyone involved knew it. But instead of shrinking the idea to fit the timeline or the budget or the proven event formula, the Y team leaned in. They wanted magic. And they trusted us to help make it real.

GATHERING PINES AT ITS BEST

Creative enough to imagine it. Brave enough to try it.

What stood out most about this team was how deeply they cared about the experience itself.

They weren’t just planning an event. They were building a memory. Something that would feel immersive and joyful for families while quietly reinforcing the values they care about: environmental stewardship, outdoor exploration, imagination, and connection.

The story they created reflected that beautifully. Bigfoot became more than Gathering Pines camp lore—it was an invitation into curiosity and play. Even the supporting woodland characters were tied to real animals meaningful to the team. That level of heart changes a project.

And importantly, they gave themselves permission to be playful. That’s not always easy for organizations, especially large ones. But the Y Adventure team understands something important: people remember how an experience felt.

WHAT WE MADE TOGETHER

A storybook trail built for real-world wonder.

This project came to life through collaboration, imagination, and a lot of trust.

Together, we shaped an experience that blended:

  • Storytelling
  • Environmental education
  • Outdoor exploration
  • Interactive discovery
  • Handcrafted creative execution

The decision to illustrate the signage by hand changed everything. It gave the experience warmth. Personality. Texture. It made the woods feel like the pages of a storybook.

And Sam’s artwork became the emotional anchor of the entire event—playful, immersive, and deeply human.

The Unlock It! map system also continued to evolve here, becoming more experiential and narrative-driven than ever before. What emerged wasn’t just event signage. It was a fully realized creative world.

THE RIPPLE EFFECT

Proof that people are hungry for experiences like this.

The inaugural Bigfoot Hide & Sneak nearly hit its ambitious attendance goals—around 500 participants for a brand-new event. Families responded enthusiastically. The beta test groups loved it. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive.

But the deeper success was cultural.

This project reinforced something important for the Y Adventure team:

  • They can think bigger
  • They can create entirely new kinds of experiences
  • They don’t have to default to the expected format

And perhaps most importantly, it revealed something broader about families right now:

There is real hunger for creative, screen-free, outdoor experiences that feel imaginative and shared. Parents are looking for ways to reconnect—with nature, with their kids, and with a slower kind of play. This event tapped directly into that.

DISTILLED INSIGHT

What surfaced once the footprints settled.

1. Educational experiences don’t have to feel educational.

Bigfoot Hide & Sneak worked because the learning was embedded inside the adventure. Families weren’t being instructed—they were discovering. That changes everything.

2. Creativity expands participation.

This event reached beyond the Y’s traditional “athletic” programming model and proved that imaginative storytelling can be just as powerful a draw as a more physical event.

3. Gathering Pines itself is part of the story.

The land isn’t just a venue. It’s an asset, a differentiator, and an emotional experience. This project helped position Gathering Pines as a destination for immersive family adventure—in addition to being a popular day camp for kids.

4. The Unlock It! platform has far more room to grow.

This wasn’t just a successful event. It was proof of concept for a much bigger idea: story-driven outdoor experiences that can evolve seasonally, geographically, and creatively.

NEXT ROUND

Big ideas tend to leave tracks behind.

This piece is a foundation. Now it needs a lifecycle.

A few natural next moves:

  • Expanding the Bigfoot world with additional characters and stories
  • Creating collectible materials, keepsakes, or merchandise
  • Developing future Unlock It! story experiences around different themes or environmental lessons
  • Building stronger promotional campaigns earlier in the cycle to increase attendance even further
  • Exploring sponsorships or grant partnerships tied to environmental education and outdoor engagement

Most importantly: keep going.

The success of this project came from believing the bigger idea was worth pursuing before there was proof it would work.

Now there is.

A CLOSING TOAST

To imagination, trust, and muddy little footprints in the woods.

Thank you for trusting us with something so personal and so ambitious.

This project had heart from the beginning. You cared deeply about the experience families would have, the lessons woven into the trail, and the feeling people would carry home afterward.

And it showed.

Bigfoot Hide & Sneak reminded all of us that creative risk still matters. That wonder still matters. That outdoor play, imagination, and storytelling can still bring people together in meaningful ways.

We’re incredibly proud to have helped bring this strange little woodland adventure to life.

Distilled.
